Nordiska museet & Alexander Stutterheim
The anniversary collection
A unique design collaboration between Nordiska museet and Alexander Stutterheim breathes new life into the museum’s collections.
The anniversary collection was born when the museum explored woolen artifacts from 1873, the year Artur and Sofi Hazelius opened their first exhibition, Scandinavian Ethnographic Collection. The exhibition was a success, both at home and at the World Expo in Paris in 1878. The vision of a museum on Djurgården became a reality in 1907.
“Drawing inspiration from the museum’s collections is fundamental. We invited Alexander, who is himself represented in our archives, to explore our artifacts with his expertise. This resulted in a shared creative process that honors both our past and the future of craftsmanship,” says Vanessa Gandy, Head of Experience.
The anniversary collection is inspired by patterned mittens and tall knitted woolen socks donated to the museum in 1873, along with a scarf knitted during WWII and a hat from the turn of the 20th century. Made from organic wool sourced on Öland and produced on a small scale, the collection bridges history and sustainability.
The collaboration also included designing new uniforms for the museum’s staff, seamlessly aligning with Nordiska museet’s brand identity and contributing to a holistic visitor experience at the museum.
